Thanks for visiting my blog. In my work life, I’m an associate professor of Restaurant, Hotel, and Meetings Management at The University of Alabama. In other aspects of my work life, I speak and write mainly about legal and risk management issues for the hospitality, tourism, and the meetings industries.
I got here through a convoluted career path that included stints as an association meeting planner, a convention and visitors bureau sales rep, a special events catering manager, a lawyer for the meetings and events industry lawyer and various other odd jobs including working in hotels and on a cruise ships. Oh, and four degrees including a J.D. in law and a Ph.D. in Hospitality (hence the “Dr.” in Dr. Tyra.)
But the older I get, the less I define myself as my job. So in my real life, I guess I’d say I’m an avid reader, a mom, a wife, a cat lover, a chocoholic, and someone who enjoys thinking about things. But I’m also someone who is a chronic teacher and learner. So in some sense, what I do is still who I am. I’m still thinking about all that.
My motto is “Carpe Everything!” (Loosely translated – seize every opportunity.) I thrive on change and a little bit of chaos and am always looking for the next challenge.
Please feel free to comment, share ideas, respectfully disagree, and otherwise participate in this blog.
Carpe everything!
